Wayne Elhard, the first Saskatchewan Party MLA ever elected, will not run again.

He has represented Cypress Hills since a June 1999 byelection and says he will stay on until the next provincial election, expected in April 2016.

In the last election in 2011 Elhard received almost 83 percent of the vote, the second-highest ever received for a Sask Party MLA.

“It has been an honour to serve the people of southwest Saskatchewan over these past 16 years,” he said. “However, after five terms, it’s time for someone else to represent the people of Cypress Hills.”

Elhard served in cabinet as highways minister and was the chair of several committees. He was also the first chair of the Global Transportation Hub.

Premier Brad Wall credited Elhard for much of the success of the party since that 1999 win.

Prior to politics Elhard, of Eastend, worked in the farm machinery business and in broadcasting.
