There is heightened security at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in advance of today’s throne speech and in the wake of shootings in Ottawa, including on Parliament Hill, that left at least one soldier and one gunman dead.

Outdoor ceremonies in Regina involving members of the Canadian Armed Forces have been cancelled or moved indoors and entry to the building is limited to only those with official invitations to the 2 p.m. speech.

Premier Brad Wall said he briefly considered cancelling the speech but decided it was an important demonstration of the democracy that Canadians value.

He also said he didn’t fear for his own safety but was most concerned about Armed Forces members.

Another soldier was killed after being struck and killed by a vehicle in Quebec earlier this week in an apparent act of terrorism.

Other legislative buildings across Canada restricted access or closed today.
