An explosion and fire in the canola meal pellet storage area at a Yorkton, Sask., crush plant today has caused extensive damage.

Photographs posted to social media sites showed a charred building at the Louis Dreyfus plant after a loud bang around 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters put out the initial fire and remained on the scene to make sure it didn’t flare up.

One person was taken to hospital with what was believed to be minor injuries, and all other employees were evacuated.

The cause hasn’t been determined but some speculated that dust ignited.

The plant opened five years ago and at the time expected to produce 500,000 tonnes of meal and 350,000 tonnes of oil each year.
