An education fund for Kaylie Spence, a little girl who lost her father in an airplane crash early this month, has grown by nearly $40,000, in large part due to the generosity of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association.
Darren Spence, two of his sons and a young friend were killed in a plane crash near Waskada, Man., Feb. 10. Spence was a member of the association’s board of directors.
The group boosted an education fund for his surviving daughter, Kaylie, during a fundraising auction held during its annual convention in Calgary Feb. 21-23.

Jill Lane, executive director of the CAAA, says the auction was not the end.
“We have members who contributed following the auction and some who said they would be donating to the fund when they returned home, we are confident the total amount will be near $40,000,” she said.
Wayne Kauenhofen, auctioneer for the sale, says he has not seen anything like it before.
“I have done a lot of auctions but to be a part of an event that helps a little girl is just a great feeling. So many of us are parents and know the feelings the family must be going through at this time. It was great just to be able to help in some way.”
The fund will be administered by Deb Spence, Darren’s sister, and is designated for Kaylie’s post secondary education. Additional contributions to the fund can be made to the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association until March 31.
