High levels of E. coli have been found in flooded Saskatchewan lakes.
The Saskatchewan health ministry said Tuesday the public should avoid swimming in the affected waters.
Testing was done July 3 in Last Mountain, Echo, Pasqua and Katepwa lakes. All had elevated levels of the harmful bacteria.
Testing is still underway in Crooked and Round lakes but officials expect similar results.
“It is recommended that residents avoid floodwaters at this time, including refraining from water contact sports and taking care not to drink or bathe in the water,” said the director of environmental health, Tim Macauley.
Precautions should be taken at other lakes and rivers that have flooded.
People who experience vomiting, nausea, diarrhea or stomach cramps after recreational water activity should consult their doctors.
A public health advisory will remain in effect until water quality improves.
