Joanne Brochu was rescued by the Warman Fire Rescue from her sinking vehicle in the South Saskatchewan River near Warman, Sask., Jan. 16.
Brochu was travelling alone eastbound across the makeshift ice road when her SUV broke through about 6 p.m.
She was eventually able to get a cell signal from the vehicle’s roof where she called 911. Volunteer fire crew soon arrived and performed a rope rescue moments before the SUV sunk out of sight.
The ice road is often used throughout the winter to cut down on travelling time. It’s the same route that the Clarksboro Ferry Crossing takes.
The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency warns people to be cautious around ice, which is unusually thin this winter. The agency is reporting the South Saskatchewan River system is of particularly concern and warns active water flow under ice is expected for the rest of this winter.
