CWB is building another high-throughput elevator, this one at Colonsay, Sask., about 65 kilometres east of Saskatoon.

The new elevator, the second announced by CWB in the past three weeks, will have 42,000 tonnes of storage capacity, including 17,000 tonnes of concrete storage and nearly 25,000 tonnes of adjoining steel storage.

The elevator will also feature a car-loading rate of up to 1,600 tonnes per hour with a 134-car loop track.

Construction has already begun roughly two kilometres southeast of Colonsay adjacent to line owned by Canadian Pacific Railway.

Government to invest in biofuel production

The federal government will invest $370 million in a new biofuel production incentive.

The project is expected to be complete in 2015, in time to receive grain from the 2015 harvest.

In late March, CWB announced a similar project at Bloom, Man., near Portage la Prairie.

“I’m excited to be able to announce the construction of our second elevator in Colonsay so fast on the heels of our Bloom elevator announcement,” said CWB president Ian White.

“We see significant opportunity in the Colonsay area for a fast and efficient grain-handling facility that will provide the customer service that farmers have come to expect from CWB.

“CWB’s growing network of modern grain-handling facilities across the Prairies will provide farmers with more choice out in the country during a critical time in the ongoing transformation of the grain industry.”

With the announcement of the Colonsay elevator, CWB’s overall asset network now includes elevators in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Mission Terminal in Ontario and Les Élévateurs des Trois-Rivières in Quebec. In addition, CWB’s two Equinox class laker vessels are scheduled to be operating in the St. Lawrence in 2015.
