CWB is making good on its promise to build a network of prairie grain elevators.

The grain company announced Sept. 4 that it is building another new concrete grain elevator, this one at Pasqua, Sask., about 10 kilometres east of Moose Jaw.

The new facility, scheduled to open in January 2016, will include 42,000 tonnes of storage capacity and a 134 car loop.

CWB officials say the elevator will be capable of loading hopper cars at a rate of 1,600 metric tonnes per hour.

Construction will begin this fall.

Canadian crop outlook has improved since January says FCC

Canadian farmers’ overall new crop outlook has improved since the beginning of the year, says Farm Credit Canada.

“Today’s Pasqua announcement has once again strategically expanded CWB’s footprint on the Prairies,” said CWB president and chief executive officer Ian White.

“Pasqua’s central location and easy road access combined with CWB’s friendly customer service will make it a great option for local farmers. It’s also a prime location for CWB, right in the middle of a high production area and with the ability to ship grain both east and west, as well as to the south.”

The new facility at Pasqua, on Highway 39, is the third new elevator construction project to be announced by CWB in the past few months.

The company is also building at Colonsay, Sask., southeast of Saskatoon, and Bloom, Man., near Portage la Prairie.

CWB has also acquired a handful of existing grain handling facilities, including Mission Terminal at Thunder Bay and a pair of farmer-owned prairie terminals, Great Sandhills Terminal at Leader, Sask., and Prairie West Terminal at Plenty, Sask.

CWB’s chief strategy officer Dayna Spiring said the company will continue to look for opportunities aimed at expanding its prairie grain handling network.

“We’re going to continue to look at (the country elevator network) … and expand that network as we see it appropriate to do so,” Spiring said.
