Prairie grain farmers who have cast their ballots in a producer plebiscite conducted Canadian Wheat Board will learn the outcome of the vote Sept. 9.

Close to 70,000 farmers and CWB permit book holders across Western Canada were eligible to participate in the non-binding vote, which will gauge farmers’ opinions on whether they wish to retain a single-desk grain marketing system or move to an open market structure.

CWB chairman Allen Oberg said the board will honour the results.

At producer meetings that concluded last week, Oberg challenged federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz to do the same.

Ritz has promised to introduce legislation in the House of Commons this fall aimed at ending single-desk marketing.

Meyers Norris Penny will tabulate the results beginning Sept. 8.
