Canadian National Railway is building two new employee training facilities in Winnipeg and Chicago.

The facilities are intended to enhance railway safety and ensure that CN’s employees are up to speed with modern equipment and operational practices in the rapidly evolving railway industry.

The proposed training centre in Winnipeg will be a 100,000 sq. foot facility capable of hosting 250 to 300 employees per week, according to a CN news release.

Both centres will offer a uniform training curriculum and provide hands-on training in indoor and outdoor laboratories.

Canada lifts several import tariffs on U.S. goods as talks continue

Starting September 1, Canada will adjust its tariffs on agricultural products, consumer goods and machinery, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at a press conference in Ottawa on Friday.

The labs will include locomotive simulators, dispatcher stations, rolling stock and other specialized training equipment.

“These facilities will be the centerpiece of CN’s enhanced railroader training program,” said CN president and chief executive officer Claude Mongeau.

“The centres will include a modern training curriculum and equipment to effectively train a new generation of railroaders.”

CN officials say workforce renewal has emerged as a top priority for the company.

Over the past four years, the company has hired thousands of new railroaders to replace long-time employees who are approaching retirement.

The new facilities are designed to train new and existing workers and strengthen CN’s safety record, the company said.

“We hope these training centres will ultimately become a benchmark for the railroad industry,” Mongeau said.
