Clean up continues today on the causeway over Buffalo Pound Lake north of Moose Jaw, Sask., where a truck-trailer unit carrying used oil flipped during bad weather Wednesday.

Highway 2 remains closed from Tuxford to Chamberlain. Officials said it could re-open later this morning.

The truck was pulling two tanks: a large main tank and a smaller pup trailer. The large tank was not breached during the accident but the smaller one spilled oil on the causeway. Environment officials said a minor sheen was visible on open water near the causeway after a small amount dripped from the bridge. An absorbent boom has been placed in the water to capture any material, and a vacuum is catching runoff.

Farm cash receipts rise in first half of 2025 on livestock gains

Farm cash receipts in the first half of the year were up 3.3 per cent over the same period last year buoyed by livestock receipts. Overall receipts between January and June totalled $49.6 billion, up $1.6 billion from the same period last year, Statistics Canada reported.

The risk to water quality is considered very low. The intake for drinking water for about one-quarter of the province’s population, including Regina and Moose Jaw, is about 19 kilometres from the spill site.

Equipment has righted the truck and trailers and they are being removed. More oil leaked from the pup trailer onto the embankment when it was being lifted, and that spill is now being assessed. The spill was about 75 metres from the open bridge.
