SeedMaster is launching a new charitable foundation to mark its 10th anniversary this fall.
The Saskatchewan manufacturer of seeding technology has created Social Entrepreneurship by Design (SED) to thank communities in Western Canada and the U.S. Midwest that have supported it over the years.
SĒD is expected to award grants of $1,000 to $10,000 as seed money to enable community groups to expand their fundraising projects to make even more money for their causes.
SeedMaster is committing $100,000 a year to the program and expects to fund up to 20 projects a year.

Louis Dreyfus posts higher volumes, lower profits in first half
Agricultural commodity merchant Louis Dreyfus Company recorded a rise in first-half sales, supported by higher volumes shipped, but weaker prices for most crops pushed down profits, it said on Friday.
SED recently awarded $5,000 to the volunteer fire department in Craik, Sask., to help raise funds for a new fire truck. The money was used to secure a popular, comedic play, RiderGirl, which is expected to attract a much larger crowd than usual to the fire department’s annual fundraising dinner.
“The SĒD grant lets us charge more for tickets, and draw a larger, younger crowd that will spend more money,” said Ron Gilmour, chair of the fire department board.
Not all SED projects will focus on fund raising. Some will be designed to raise awareness around important causes.
