Canola up

Canola rose Monday, propelled higher by a waft of recovery air as a “risk on” attitude inflated most assets.

It was a particularly good day for crop futures, which were often the strongest commodity class during the day. The main area of weakness was in precious metals, underlining the risk-on nature of the markets.

Even the meats were strong Monday, escaping the negativity of last week’s potentially bearish news about bird flu in Asia and Russian import bans that made most North American pork and beef unacceptable due to ractopamine.

Trump says US will sell ‘so much’ beef to Australia

The United States will sell “so much” beef to Australia, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday after Canberra relaxed import restrictions, adding that other countries that refused U.S. beef products were on notice.

The world’s stock markets were in a buoyant mood, recovering some of the confidence lost in the end-of-week rout.

The same was true of crops, which responded well to news of adequate export sales figures.

May canola futures rose $7 per tonne to $618.20, while November rose $7.60 to $556.30.

Wheat was strong Monday, helped by reports of a big sale of hard red winter wheat, rising more than two and a half percent in Kansas City contracts, almost two percent for Chicago contract and about one-and-a-half percent for Minneapolis wheat.
