Canola futures take bigger hit than most crops

Much of canola futures’ remaining cockiness was slapped out of it Monday, as prices slumped and sellers had trouble finding buyers.

“The speculators have been sitting there long and now they’re trying to get out,” said broker Ken Ball of P.I. Financial in Winnipeg.

Monday was a day of losses for almost all crops as weather worries alleviated and North American crops in general were seen to be in improving shape.

But canola suffered more red ink than most crops, dropping $17.50 per tonne to $599.90 on the July contract and $10.30 to $548.70 for the November.

Ball said commercial buyers walked away from the July contracts weeks ago, not believing the theory that a massive short squeeze would make prices skyrocket before expiry, and so far they appear to have made that call right.

“The commercials just didn’t buy that theory,” said Ball.

The drop of July canola to slightly beneath $600 and the compression of the big inverse that has dominated the old crop/new crop spread since last summer may create more bearish signals to traders, with old crop price momentum fading.

Soybeans fell 16 cents on the July contract and 17 cents on the August, reversing Friday’s soybeans rally.

Oats were an odd exception to the general selloff in the crop markets, with September oats rising six cents per bushel to $3.95, close to July’s $4.10.

Ball said he didn’t read much into that aberration, since that crop’s futures contract is thinly traded and can be skewed by big moves by a handful of players.

“It’s a fairly tight market dominated by a few traders and a few companies,” said Ball.

Crops were the weakest part of the commodities complex Monday, losing about one percent overall. Energies were also weak, but meats and the “softs” – sugar, coffee and cocoa – were winners on the day.

U.S. equity markets were higher Monday.
