Canola rises on lack of farmer selling, concerns about seeding delays

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Published: April 11, 2013

Canola futures edged higher Thursday, supported by lack of farmer selling and a slight rise in old crop soybeans.

The cold spring and expected late start to seeding is supporting new crop canola prices.

Wheat bounced back a little from Wednesday’s losses. Freezing weather in Oklahoma and Kansas likely caused some damage to winter wheat at the jointing stage.

Old crop soybeans were stronger on good demand for tight stocks but new crop slipped a little on expectations for a large 2013 crop.

Oats posted a fifth day of increases, continuing to claw back from the crash that followed the larger than expected U.S. March 1 corn stocks report issued March 28.

Reuters reported today that cold weather in Europe is delaying seeding of spring barley past the ideal window and that could limit yields. The cold weather in March in Europe might have damaged some rapeseed there.

While it is cold in the central U.S. and some places are getting snow, moisture levels are improving. Much of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and eastern Kansas have received between one and two inches of moisture in the past two days. Western Kansas and Oklahoma remain dry.
