Old crop canola futures threatened to slip below the $500 per tonne level on Wednesday but new crop November edged slightly higher for the second day.
It looks like the market is trying to keep new crop canola close to the psychologically important $500 level.

In both canola and soybeans, the May and November contracts are almost the same, with canola very close to $500 a tonne and soybean right around US$10 a bushel.

WHEAT
Winter wheat contracts fell about one percent but spring wheat was little changed.
Rain expected over the next seven days in the U.S. Plains and Midwest is expected to improve the condition of winter wheat crops.
Crop futures are generally under downward pressure from the record large South American crops and expectations of a record large seeded area of American soybeans.
Reuters reported that soybean crush margins in China have turned negative and that could slow the pace of its imports.
OUTSIDE MARKETS
Light crude oil nearby futures in New York were down 20 cents to US$48.04 per barrel.
In the afternoon, the Canadian dollar was trading around US75.01 cents, up from 74.93 cents the previous trading day. The U.S. dollar was C$1.3331.
On Wall Street, traders were watching to see if Congress will be able to pass the new health care law.
In Canada, the Liberal government released its annual budget. It made minor changes to some programs and taxes but had no major initiatives.
The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index ended up 35.33 points, or 0.23 percent, at 15,348.46.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.03 percent to end at 20,661.3 points, while the S&P 500 gained 0.19 percent to 2,348.45.
The Nasdaq Composite added 0.48 percent to 5,821.64.
