Canola follows soybeans up

October began in the green for most North American crops futures markets, but wheat weakened.

Canola escaped the downdraft from weakening soybean oil, instead following behind a rise in soybeans to mark a more than $2 per tonne gain in trading Oct. 3.

“Canola just tagged along,” said P.I. Financial broker Ken Ball, comparing canola to U.S. soybean values.

“It’s been stuck in a rut for a while.”

Canola spent most of September in the $460-470 per tonne range, and that’s where it spent Oct. 3 too.

Feed Grains Weekly: Price likely to keep stepping back

As the harvest in southern Alberta presses on, a broker said that is one of the factors pulling feed prices lower in the region. Darcy Haley, vice-president of Ag Value Brokers in Lethbridge, added that lower cattle numbers in feedlots, plentiful amounts of grass for cattle to graze and a lacklustre export market also weighed on feed prices.

But soybeans showed promising signs of breaking higher in coming days.

“The beans have been trying to rally for a week and largely fizzling, but today they got going,” said Ball.

This is the period in which traders begin trying to estimate when harvest lows have been reached, and Ball thinks some speculative funds might have decided that they have been reached or are close and that they can get ahead of a trend change and squeeze speculative shorts.

“You may be seeing some funds coming in to beans today betting that they could spook the shorts and get a rebound rally going, and they got it going pretty well.”

Soybeans have often hit their lows and begun recovering in the first week of October, so it would not be surprising to see some expecting that to occur this year.

Corn futures also saw a nice rise, suggesting the same phenomenon could be occurring there, with shorts becoming uneasy holding onto their positions.

Both Chicago and Kansas City wheat contracts fell, but spring wheat hung on with only slight changes. However, wheat futures have staged a rally in the past few weeks, rising throughout the month until the last few sessions at the end of September, so traders will be watching to see if most gains can be maintained. Oct. 3 wasn’t an auspicious sign for bulls.

Healthy U.S. exports of corn and soybeans lent a fundamental hand to the generally positive market mood.

Grains were the strongest component of the commodities complex on Oct. 3.

Light crude oil nearby futures in New York were up 57 cents to US$48.81 per barrel.

The Canadian dollar at noon was US76.12 cents, down from 76.24 cents the previous trading day. The U.S. dollar at noon was C$1.3137.
