Canola flat on a flat market day

On a flat day in the grain markets, canola was virtually flat.

July canola stayed beneath $600 per tonne while November stayed under $550.

The biggest grain gainer Monday was corn, which rose in both old crop and new crop months, while wheat was flat, with spring wheat weakening within the wheat complex, and soybeans mixed but generally weaker.

Good growing conditions on the Canadian Prairies and northern U.S. Great Plains softened northern crops like canola, spring wheat and oats, but dryness forecast for the U.S. southern Plains kept prices of crops grown there firmer.

Canada lifts several import tariffs on U.S. goods as talks continue

Starting September 1, Canada will adjust its tariffs on agricultural products, consumer goods and machinery, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at a press conference in Ottawa on Friday.

World equity markets were moderately higher Monday, while commodities were slightly weaker overall.

Oil prices hit a 2013 high Monday before easing slightly. Rather than a sign of expectations of greater economic progress, the oil increase appears to be the result of traders and users worrying about what will happen if the Syrian situation goes from bad to worse and disrupts the oil-rich region.

The G8 summit is not drawing much market attention because its focus has moved toward the question of Syrian intervention and away from economic concerns.

And a general lackadaisicalness is flowing into the markets as summer days beckon and no weather disasters are presently shocking grain market traders to send the thinly traded summer markets into volatile gyrations.
