U.S. wheat futures rose on Tuesday amid speculation that a freeze in key growing areas of Argentina could hurt that country’s crop and turn global buyers to U.S. wheat, traders said.

KCBT hard red winter wheat and MGEX spring wheat led  gains as those contracts price the high-protein offerings typically desired by overseas buyers.

U.S. grains: Corn, soybeans extend losses as Midwest weather looks crop-friendly

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures extended session losses on Tuesday, weighed down by forecasts for crop-friendly rain in U.S. grain belts this week.

Some technical buying also lifted the wheat market, which traded lower for much of the session.

The benchmark Chicago Board of Trade December soft red winter wheat contract found support as it neared its 20-day moving average. The contract’s early declines put it within 1/4 cent of that key technical level.

Argentina’s wheat belt was hit by frost early on Tuesday that could damage 2013-14 yields, meteorologists said.

Analysts expect the U.S. Agriculture Department report on Monday to show U.S. wheat production at 2.108 billion bushels in 2013, down from 2.269 billion in 2012. USDA’s August report estimated the crop at 2.114 billion bushels.

U.S. wheat stocks as of September 1 were forecast at 1.913 billion bushels, down from 2.105 billion a year ago.

Bangladesh’s state grains buyer tendered to buy 50,000 tonnes of wheat for shipment in October or November.

CORN

Chicago Board of Trade corn futures closed lower on Tuesday on seasonal harvest pressure and reports of better-than-expected yields in the early U.S. harvest, traders said.

Satisfactory weather is expected over the next couple of weeks for harvesting of the 2013 U.S. corn and soybean crops, an agricultural meteorologist said on Tuesday.

The USDA said late on Monday that 7 percent of the U.S. corn crop had been harvested, up from 4 percent a week ago and below the 16 percent five-year average.

Private exporters reported the sale of 180,000 tonnes of U.S. corn to Colombia for delivery during the current 2013/14 marketing year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Tuesday.

Cash basis bids for corn fell sharply in the U.S. Midwest on Tuesday, pressured seasonally by the advancing harvest and subsequent pickup in truck deliveries, cash dealers said.

Basis bids for corn shipped by barge to the U.S. Gulf Coast were mostly steady to firm on Tuesday, underpinned by moderate demand and light grain movement following recent price declines, traders said.

SOYBEANS

CBOT soybean futures closed higher on Tuesday on concerns U.S. farmers may not harvest as many acres of soybeans than had been expected, traders said.

With the U.S. soybean harvest under way, commodity analysts remain unsure of just how many acres were planted with the oilseed last spring-necessary information in determining the crop size of the world’s largest producer.

USDA late on Monday said 50 percent of the U.S. soybean crop was in good to excellent condition, unchanged from a week ago, and said 47 percent of the crop was dropping leaves.

Malaysian palm oil futures reversed early gains to end down on Tuesday amid forecasts that competing oilseed supplies would soon flood the market although a weak ringgit checked losses.

The November soybean contract is above all key moving averages with first major support at the 50-day moving average of $12.89-1/2. The nine-day relative strength index is at 39.
