Canola futures edged higher Tuesday on a weaker Canadian dollar and continuing uncertainty about the size of crops in Canada and the United States.
The Alberta crop report said only 25 percent of the canola crop there is in good to excellent shape.
Soybeans also lent support to canola. The trade is positioning ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture report out Aug. 12.
There is some speculation that USDA will trim its soybean seeded area forecast to account for wet weather that prevented some seeding this spring.

Pulse Weekly: Talk arises of India ending duty-free period

With harvest underway across the Canadian Prairies rumblings has been felt from the other side of the world, specifically in regards yellow peas. There have been recent media reports stating the Indian government is under growing domestic pressure to end its duty-free period on yellow pea imports.

Oil prices climbed after a five percent drop Monday and commodity and markets were generally calmer after the previous day’s rout linked to concerns about a faltering Chinese economy.
Gains in soybeans were limited by the generally good condition of the U.S. crop.
The USDA on Monday pegged 63 percent of the soybean crop good to excellent, up from 62 percent a week ago but below 71 percent last year.
Corn futures edged higher after hitting a six week low on Monday. The USDA corn crop condition rating steadied at 70 percent good to excellent this week.

The USDA’s forecast is 57 million
Argentina farmers are planting their 2015-16 wheat crop. Some private forecasters think the crop will reach only 10-10.5 million tonnes.
The USDA’s forecast is 11.5 million. ISDA pegged last year’s crop at 12.5 million.
Low prices and dry conditions are a concern as is the export quota system that limits shipments to ensure ample domestic supply.
The quotas resulted in a 3-3.5 million-tonne wheat surplus at the end of last season.
