In South Korea’s ‘apple county’, farmers beg not to be sacrificed for US trade deal

South Korean apple farmers, who account for about a third of the roughly 14,000 households in the sleepy rural area of Cheongsong county, worry that their way of life could be under threat from an influx of cheap U.S. imports.

Wheat also rose, with the biggest gains in Chicago but Minneapolis spring wheat edged only a fraction of cent higher.

The harvest is ahead of last year at this time, so the big pickup in the volume of export shipping is also expected to happen earlier.

Light crude oil nearby futures in New York were down 84 cents to US$52.17 per barrel.

The Canadian dollar at noon was US75.95 cents, down from 76.24 cents the previous trading day. The U.S. dollar at noon was C$1.3167.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index closed up 41.86 points, or 0.27 percent, at 15,498.80.
