April 1 has so far brought a few news release spoofs across Alberta news desks.

The Alberta Liberals announced a “wild boar bonanza” designed to ease the threat of wild pigs that stalk visitors to this fair province. Leader Raj Sherman also saw it as a chance to connect with rural issues.

“You know, when hunting pigs, you really have to get down in the grass. Stay real quiet and connect with the grass and their roots,” Sherman said in the April 1 news release.

“So this is the perfect opportunity for us to continue to build the grassroots of the party and tackle a pig of a problem.”

Alberta harvest wrapping up: report

Harvest operations advanced to 96 per cent complete in Alberta as of Oct. 7, with only a few late-seeded cereal and canola fields remaining, according to the latest provincial crop report.

In southern Alberta, Lethbridge College announced a new centre for inland marine research, at which existing facilities would be refurbished to accommodate a large marine life area on the college’s bucolic prairie campus.

“This move will make it possible for state-of-the-art dolphin research, among other types of inland marine research, to happen in Lethbridge. It also illustrates the college’s flexibility and skill in responding to changing provincial priorities,” said the news release.

In the April 1 release, college president Paula Burns called it a great day in the institution’s history.

“Inland marine research is a growing field in landlocked Alberta, and the demand for skilled marine workers to fill these jobs is only going to increase in the coming years,” she said.
