Threats of flooding from the Seven Persons reservoir and creek in Cypress County and Medicine Hat have been averted for the moment, though both Alberta municipalities remain in a local state of emergency.

Alberta Environment reported today that crews had successfully relieved pressure on the reservoir spillway. However, water levels are expected to rise today and the situation will be monitored.

Residents of about 40 homes in Cypress County can now return home after being evacuated yesterday. Residents in parts of Medicine Hat remain on evacuation alert, Alberta Environment said.

Alberta ministers of environment, agriculture and municipal affairs, as well as the local MLA, toured the region earlier today to assess the situation.
