Much of southwestern Alberta is under a fire ban as hot, dry weather continues and another week of the same is forecast.

Alberta Environment said Aug. 25 that the fire hazard is extreme throughout the region and bans are in effect for many provincial parks and recreation areas.

The bans prohibit use of all wood, briquette and propane or natural gas fires, including those in designated camp kitchens and portable fire pits. Gas and propane stoves approved for cooking are allowed.

In forest regions of the province’s southwest, a fire ban is in effect south of the Highwood River and from south of Carnarvon Creek west to the B.C. border.
