Alberta cows finalists in national championship

Two cows owned by Alberta dairy producers are among four finalists in the Holstein Canada 2012 Cow of the Year competition.

Raeland Leduc Wilhelmina is owned by Rocky Mountain Holsteins of Cochrane and Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy is owned by Morsan Farms Ltd. of Ponoka, Van Ruinen Dairy Ltd. of Lacombe, Gert Andreasen of Ponoka and Mark Butz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Cow of the Year award recognizes longevity, production, genetic merit and strength of pedigree among Holstein cows.

The winner is chosen by vote among Holstein Canada members, which will take place in February and March.

The other finalists are Comestar Goldwyn Lilac, owned by Gervations Inc., Maple Wood Farms and O’Connor Land and Cattle Co. of Campbellville, Jerseyville and Ajax, Ont., respectively, and Gen-I-Beq Shottle Barbi, owned by Syndicat Gen-I-Beq of St. Patrice, Que.
