Saskatchewan will expand a pilot project to develop an industry-led agricultural plastics recycling program.

Environment minister Ken Cheveldayoff said today that $75,000 would go to CleanFarms Inc. to develop the program for plastic grain bags, plastic twine, silage bags and bale wrap.

In 2012, CleanFarms conducted stakeholder meetings and submitted a draft program to the ministry.

The Saskatchewan Agricultural Stewardship Council, which includes industry representatives, will develop and implement the program under the CleanFarms umbrella.

Cheveldayoff said 83,300 kilograms of plastic were recycled during the two-year pilot project funded by the agriculture ministry and administered by the Provincial Council of Agriculture Development and Diversification Boards.

He said a province-wide program will offer farms consistent access to recycling.

“Municipalities that operate rural landfills are looking for opportunities to divert materials in order to extend the life of their landfills, and measures like a provincial agricultural plastics recycling program can aid those efforts as well,” he said.
