Ag equipment entrepreneur dies

Rob Stenson, the 44-year-old chief executive officer of Ag Growth International Inc., died Oct. 15 in Winnipeg, six weeks after the company announced he was being treated for cancer.Stenson was originally from Swift Current, Sask., where he started Batco Manufacturing. Batco, which makes specialty crop belt conveyors, was the first company under the AGI umbrella when Stenson founded that company in 1996.AGI launched an initial public offering in May 2004 and now includes six Canadian manufacturing facilities, three in the United States and one in Finland.Its products include augers, grain dryers and livestock equipment.”Rob’s accomplishment in growing AGI from very modest beginnings is a great Canadian success story,” board chair Bill Lambert said in a statement. “Rob is irreplaceable both as friend and business colleague, but he leaves AGI with a clear strategic direction and a deep and capable management team led by his co-founder, Gary Anderson.”Anderson, who is president and chief operating officer, has been named interim CEO.AGI trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The company posted second quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $19.6 million, and $32 million for the first six months of the year.
