Farmers who want to prevent spring flooding of their yard sites are eligible for funding through the $22 million Saskatchewan emergency flood damage reduction program.

Details of the program were announced Feb. 22.

It will pay 100 percent of the cost of technical assistance required to prevent flooding, and 85 percent of the cost of berm construction to protect farmsteads and country residences.

Communities are eligible for 75 percent of construction costs for berms, channels and channel improvements.

As well, short-term measures such as sand bagging and clearing culverts are eligible for 50 percent assistance.

Protection of farmland is not an eligible expense.

Environment minister Dustin Duncan said flooding is expected this spring and the money allocated by the province is based on an estimate of where officials think it is likely to occur.

Landowners should contact the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority for information on how to proceed.

The program will also pay for testing and analysis of private water supplies that might have been affected by flooding.
