South

Alberta

South

  • Above average heat and wind have moved harvest to about 50 percent complete. Rain the past two weekends has stalled harvest and damaged swathed crops.
  • Yields of pulse crops are near average, canola and cereals are slightly below. Peas lagged lentils and dry beans in yield. Quality is generally high.
  • Spring cereal harvest is approaching 75 percent. Canola has started.
  • Fall cereal seeded acres are down due to late harvest and dry conditions.

  • Straw baling is beginning, with straw bringing better than average prices.
  • Pasture conditions are 57 percent poor, 34 fair and nine percent good.

Central

  • Harvest is about 30 percent complete.
  • Average harvested yields at 40 to 70 percent of 10-year average.
  • Eastern crops yielding poorly.
  • Some crops being salvaged for feed.
  • Hay yields are poor to fair, with one third taking a second cut.
  • Straw in short supply, feed very short. Some cattle feeding underway.

Northwest

  • Rain has slowed progress.
  • Cereal harvest 20 percent complete.
  • Strong winds near Barrhead and Leduc played havoc with swathed canola.
  • Grasshopper and gopher damage reported.
  • Tame hay quality and quantity poor. Oat crops being sold for baling.

Northeast

  • Harvest up to 25 percent complete. Crop yields poorer in the west than east.
  • Canola swathing underway, but late. Near average yields near Lloydminster, but spotty.
  • Silage of some late canola crops reported.
  • Pasture conditions are rated at 71 percent poor, 27 fair and two good.
  • Serious hay shortages and pasture problems. Some pasture supplementation underway.

Peace and B.C.

  • Rain showers slowed harvest.
  • Canola swathing continues. Some very late spring cereals being harvested as greenfeed.
  • Pastures are rated at 59 percent poor, 30 fair and 11 good.
  • Grasshoppers and gophers reported.

Saskatchewan

Southwest

  • Rain on the weekend delayed harvest progress. A slow moving system delivered up to 30 millimetres in the northern region.
  • Spring cereal and canola harvests are 75 percent completed. Flax and chickpea harvest has started. Fall cereals, pulses and mustard are done.
  • Pulse yields better than average.
  • Canola 30 to 45 bushel range.
  • Sawfly and grasshoppers reported.

Southeast

  • Rain showers over the weekend stalled otherwise good harvest progress. Pulses and fall cereals completed, spring cereals 30 percent complete.
  • Early sunflower yields at 1,350 pounds.
  • Rain causing sprouting concerns for malt barley and durum.
  • Late season hay crops slow to dry.

West-central

  • Rain on the weekend has stalled harvest. Heat improving progress overall.
  • Pulse harvest 80 percent complete. Spring cereals 30 percent complete. Spring wheat yields 31 bu. per acre, durum 30, oats 56, barley 50, flax 20, canola 27 and mustard 1,000 pounds per acre.
  • Canola swathing nearly done.
  • Hay shortages and pasture supplementation underway near the border.

East-central

  • Rain up to 20 mm in the west.
  • Peas nearly complete with lentils 80 percent in the bin. Harvest 30 percent complete.
  • Canola swathing 75 percent done.
  • Winter wheat yield 39 bu. per acre, rye 26, durum 35, oats 75, barley 61, flax 22, peas 40, canola 31, mustard 1,140 lb. per acre, lentils 1,530.

Northwest

  • Rain showers slowed harvest progress.
  • Winter cereal harvest wrapping up, with winter wheat yielding 29 and fall rye 25.
  • Early canola yields 29 bu. per acre, flax yields 26 bu.
  • Pastures poor.

Northeast

  • A few showers from 10 to 47 mm, heat and wind improved harvest progress.
  • Pea harvest nearing completion, with 42 bu. average.
  • Canola swathing with early yields of 32 bu.
  • Spring cereal harvest 25 percent complete. Durum yielding 37 bu., oats 80, barley 68, spring wheat 38, winter wheat 45, fall rye 35.

Manitoba

Southwest

  • Heat and wind boosted harvest progress.
  • Cereals 70 to 90 percent complete, with average and better yields.
  • Canola harvest 60 percent complete.
  • Average to above average yields.
  • Grazing of grain and hay fields. Supplemental feeding starting in driest areas.

Central and Red River Valley

  • Spring wheat harvest 65 to 90 percent with 45 to 75 bu. yields.
  • Canola combining 20 percent complete, 35 to 50 bu. yields common, up to 75 bu.
  • Barley yields 75 to 100 bu., oats 90 bu.
  • Harvested fields tilled to dry out topsoil.
  • Edible bean harvest underway, with above average yields.
  • Potato harvesting underway, with higher than average yields.
  • Third cut of alfalfa slow to dry.
  • Lack of canola stubble hurting winter wheat seeded acres.

Interlake

  • Harvesting, silaging, haying and tillage all underway at once.
  • Harvest 10 percent complete in north, up to 70 in south.
  • Soybean leaves turning colour and starting to drop.

Northwest

  • Showers and heavy dews are slowing gains made by high temperatures.
  • Spring wheat harvest starting in the north. Yields average to above. Oats 90 bu., barley 75 bu.
  • Moisture a problem. Native hay harvest stalled near Waterhen.
