FARGO, N.D. – Many farmers put stock in versatility when comparing commodity trailers.
One that handles extra income jobs as well as normal on-farm harvest duties is more attractive than a one-trick-pony trailer that specializes in a limited number of products.
That’s what Meyer Manufacturing had in mind when it designed The Boss series of commodity boxes.
Most other designs rely on the unibody concept, with structural integrity coming from the steel or aluminum sheeting that makes up the main box.

The Meyer design uses a system similar to house construction. Vertical steel studs and horizontal steel joists are welded to the I-beam bottom frame side rails on 16-inch centres.
Replaceable stainless steel, fibre-glass or poly sheets are bolted to this rigid frame.
Farmers who have bought Boss boxes in the past four years are using them for almost everything, said Don Haugen of Haugen Sales and Leasing in Wyndmere, North Dakota.
“Guys use them for grass, hay silage, corn, virtually anything they can blow in there,” Haugen said.
“The live bottom walking floor pulls the slats with almost no resistance. Anything a guy loads into there, it unloads in 30 second flat with the p.t.o. drive.
“At the back, they’ve got an automatic delay system that holds the gate open until the entire load is dumped. Nobody else has that feature. That really speeds up the unloading.”
The cart has optional centre open and grain hopper doors as well as the standard top pivot door.
Boss boxes are available as trailers or tandem mounts from 18 to 26 feet. Semi trailer Boss boxes are available in 30 or 36-foot lengths.
Smaller boxes require 25 gallons per minute of hydraulic flow while larger units demand 40 g.p.m.
Twin 120 drive chains rated at 30,000 pounds tensile strength pull the floor slats.
The company said the trailers are also popular with custom operators hauling cattle manure, poultry litter, sawdust and municipal waste.
The 36 foot trailer Haugen brought to Big Iron listed for $36,000 US.
