Salford gives precise control to granular spread by using a left/right division, individual spinner control and controlled multi-fin dividers. Until recently, the term “spinner spreader” was not heard in conjunction with the term “precision farming.” But more companies are upgrading their control technology to put a new spin on the word “spreader.” | Salford photo

We haven’t normally associated spinner spreaders with precision farming, until recently. More spreader manufacturers are employing new technology so growers can apply high granular volumes with precise accuracy.

The Salford Group says its new BBI Sniper spinner spreader delivers targeted dry fertilizer rates at swath widths up to 120 feet. Like all variable rate spreaders, it uses fresh technology to rapidly adjust its pattern on the fly while following prescription application maps.

Salford designed the Sniper spreader for farmers looking for the most cost-effective and consistent dry fertilizer delivery with a pull-type applicator, according to a company news release. The technology was engineered to reduce overlap in irregular fields and fields with extreme-point rows. Spreader swath control is a complex job involving multiple systems working together.

Genesis Fertilizers seeks government funding

Genesis Fertilizers is actively seeking funding from government and a strategic partner. The company dispelled a rumour that DL E&C has abandoned the project.

  • Left-right hopper sections use the proven split conveyor for maximum control and rapid adjustment on the fly. Each side of the conveyor feeds its own flow divider and spinner, allowing half-width spreading along field boundaries and sensitive areas.
  • Closed, multi-fin flow dividers tightly control the fertilizer drop point onto the spinner, ensuring accurate material delivery and providing protection from wind and minimizing the slope effect.
  • Independently controlled spinners have been engineered to speed up or slow down to accommodate varying swath widths. The system is calibrated for 12 sections, six per side, to maximize compatibility with ISOBUS virtual terminals and allow effective application at widths up to 120 feet in one pass.
  • In addition, the BBI Sniper features dynamic metering for more precise application rates. The dry rate controller monitors scale readings and tunes the metering system accordingly.

Built on a high-clearance frame, the BBI Sniper has a nine-ton capacity hopper. There’s a choice of either row crop or flotation tires. Spinners, shields and other key components are built with stainless steel and are laser-cut. A closed hydraulic system with an air cooler keeps oil at optimal operating temperature for reduced wear.
