BRANDON – The kind of probe camera that doctors use to take pictures of their patients’ insides is now available to the public.

It’s not the same quality as the medical version, says Acklands Granger representative Jean-Guy Marion, but it can still come in handy.

“There’s an LED light at the tip of the probe, and there’s a million uses for these things,” Marion said while demonstrating the camera.

“It fits into a sparkplug hole or a fuel injector hole so you can inspect the top of a piston. You can look inside a valve cover to inspect the valve train. Or you can look inside a gearbox or a differential for a chipped tooth.”

Marion, a welding and metal fabrication specialist, said the camera is also ideal for checking the inside of welded tanks and sealed containers.

Other uses include pinpointing plumbing leaks within walls, looking inside bell housings and inspecting hard-to-access machines such as combines.

The camera is waterproof, dust-proof and oil-proof and it’s powered by a single nine-volt battery. The probe is one meter long and 12 millimetres in diameter. It has a 2.4- inch LCD monitor.

“It’s a full colour monitor screen, but it’s not really a high quality image. But it shows you what’s what. Sometimes the light is too bright for good resolution, so there’s a control to dim it.”

Acklands Granger carries remote camera probes with prices ranging from $222 for the Seeker 200 Inspection Camera to $5,000 for high-end cameras. For more information, visit www.acklandsgranger.com.
