Steam comes out of hot flax market

The early-season buying spree that was prompted by this year’s drought appears to be over, at least for the time being

Flax prices have come off of their highs as the market undergoes a reset, says a processor of the crop. “It seems to be easing off now because we’re just at some values that are just so, so high,” said Kevin Dick, president of All Commodities Trading. Prices have dropped to $40 to $41 per […] Read more

New crop contracts attractive for those not scared off by 2021

Don’t give up on new crop contracting. Any other year, the new crop prices emerging for 2022 would be a dream come true. Any other year, these sorts of values would generate a sign-up frenzy. Instead, producers are hesitant and wary and you can’t blame them. New crop yellow peas are being quoted in the […] Read more

‘Varying variability’ prompts seed planning advice

Producers may want to look into their seeding plans early this year, even though there’s no obvious shortage of seed varieties. However, with a turbulent market, anything can happen. Jake Ayre of Southern Seed in Minto, Man., said getting things sorted now can prevent disappointment in the spring. “On any given year, we encourage farmers […] Read more

Flax crop takes hit

WINNIPEG (MarketsFarm) — Prices for flax have skyrocketed this year as production falls and demand increases, says Dale McManus of Johnston’s Seeds in Welwyn, Sask. He said Johnston’s was paying $38 per bushel for golden flax picked up off of the farm and brown flax was fetching $36 to $37 per bushel. Growers in Saskatchewan […] Read more

Even though it departs from the normal rules of crop rotation, to deal with Group 2 herbicide residue and to avoid fields with high nitrogen levels, some producers may decide back-to-back pulse crops are the least bad decision. Abnormal weather leads to abnormal actions. | File photo

Some producers may seed back-to-back pulses

Editor’s note: This column was written prior to BASF releasing its message to Growers found here. An array of unusual considerations will go into next year’s crop rotations and there will be some atypical choices. One big consideration for many growers will be herbicide residue. In a dry year, many herbicides with residual activity persist […] Read more

Chickpea prices may have room to grow

Most in the trade believe Statistics Canada’s total supply estimate for 2020-21 of 500,000 tonnes is too high

The chickpea bull run likely has a little more runway, says an analyst. “It looks to me like there is still more upside possibly but maybe not up to those record levels that we had a few years ago,” said Chuck Penner, analyst with LeftField Commodity Research. Prices topped 65 cents per pound in 2017. […] Read more

LEFT: A wheat field in one year of the researchers’ experiments. Here, different varieties are noticeable because of physical differences – namely colour or hue and if the head has awns on it or not. RIGHT: Shown here is the difference of a fungicide application within one variety. The left side of the photo shows the control side of the plot that had no chemical fungicide applied. The slightly darker colouring of the wheat is largely due to disease. The right side of the photo shows the fungicide-sprayed side of the plot. The lighter colouring is healthier wheat, which often also has a few additional days to mature, thereby increasing yield. | Julie Baniszewski photos

Wheat and more wheat, multiple varieties in one field

Researchers have found that several wheat varieties mixed in the same crop offer disease and insect protection

Growing multiple varieties of wheat together can reduce disease pressure as much as a fungicide application does, according to research out of Pennsylvania State University. Julie Baniszewski led the research project that compared a wheat crop composed of four different varieties, to a single wheat variety that received a fungicide application, as well as a […] Read more
