“Plant in well-prepared soil when all danger of frost is past.”
So says many a vegetable and flower seed packet. The words seldom fail to give me pause. On the Prairies, when is danger of frost actually past? History, and past garden disasters, show there’s potential for frost in almost any month of the year.
However, that potential didn’t stop the annual planting of the sweet pea seeds this past weekend. The timing is slightly later than usual, but their usual spot was covered in snow until April 11. As added encouragement, the netting is already up and ready for those sweet tendrils to climb upon. Now all that is needed is for frost to be truly past.
