Longtime Saskatoon NDP MLA Pat Atkinson will not seek re-election in November.
Atkinson, 58, will have served 25 years by the next provincial election and is the longest serving female MLA in the province’s history.
A teacher by training, Atkinson was first elected in the fall of 1986. After that first term in opposition, she served in the cabinets of Roy Romanow and Lorne Calvert. Her cabinet portfolios included health, social services, education and finance.
She was also deputy opposition leader after the NDP government was defeated.
Atkinson often referred to her rural background. She is the daughter of former National Farmers Union president Roy Atkinson.
