The assets of a Saskatchewan feedlot are on the block after falling victim to tough times in the cattle sector.
Pipestone Feeders Ltd. of Grenfell opened in 2002 and emptied for the last time in April when it went into receivership. It had capacity for 10,000 head.
The receiver, BDO Canada Ltd., is accepting written offers until Sept. 27 for the assets, including buildings, weigh scales and handling and feeding equipment.
Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association president Jack Hextall was among the initial proponents of the feedlot.

“It’s certainly a disappointment to everyone,” he said. “It’s tough sledding right now in that industry.”
Hextall said a community-owned feedlot is still a good model in better economic circumstances.
Local investors included farmers and the Grenfell Co-op.
Other feedlots have been experiencing difficulty over the past few years and Hextall said this year’s wet weather in Saskatchewan hasn’t helped.
The lots are “taking a beating” from the traffic of both cattle and vehicles, while some have seen fences undermined by water, he said.
