Sept. 30 is the deadline for applying for compensation under the federal-provincial Excess Moisture Program.
Shawn Jaques of Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corp. said Saskatchewan producers with crop insurance apply only for additional acres that flooded out and were not covered by insurance. Non-insured producers have to file an application and indicate acres they could not seed, or acres that were flooded.
Processing of compensation cheques for crops lost or unseeded this spring due to excess moisture began the week of Aug. 16, he said.
“We’re processing claims daily. We’re well on our way.”

The federal and provincial governments are providing $30 per eligible acre to producers who had land too wet to seed as of June 20, or who lost seeded crop because of flooding on or before July 31.
In Manitoba, about 900 cheques were mailed out Aug. 31, said David Van Deynze, manager of claim services with the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corp.
MASC received 4,999 applications by the Aug. 3 deadline.
Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation’s final day for receiving applications was Sept. 1 and some cheques are already in the mail.
Jaques said branch offices have been inundated with inquiries.
“There’s been a lot of traffic at our offices, a lot of phone calls. It certainly has been a challenging year for Saskatchewan producers,” he said.
“We’re getting calls daily from producers as they’re out in the field and they’re scouting their fields. Until all those applications are in and processed, we won’t really have an idea of the total amount of claims.”
