The Western Producer will have a new publisher as of June 1.Larry Hertz, the weekly newspaper’s advertising director, will replace Ken Zacharias, who will become director of finance for a branch within Glacier Media Inc.The announcement was madeMay 20 by Jonathan Kennedy, president and chief executive officer of Glacier Media Inc., which owns The Western Producer and about 100 other Canadian publications.Hertz, 48, joined the newspaper six years ago. He is a former agricultural sales director for Rawlco Radio in Saskatoon, and before that spent seven years in the co-operative retail system in Altona, Man., and in Arcola and Gravelbourg, Sask.Hertz said he intends to build on the strong foundation left by Zacharias.“I want to take the heritage brand of the Producer, which has become a household name across the Prairies, and carry on the tradition of industry leading journalism that serves farmers and agribusinesses,” said Hertz.“I also want to help the Producer team develop new on-line and mobile products and venture into other avenues that will best serve our subscribers and advertisers.”Hertz grew up on a grain farm near Kindersley, Sask., and retains his passion for agriculture and for promoting its value inside and outside the industry.“Farming has been in my blood since I was just a kid, and still is. Once a farmer, always a farmer, I guess.”Zacharias has been publisher of the Producer since 2001, and before that was the newspaper’s controller. He leaves a 21-year career at the newspaper for a newly created position in financial oversight.“I take a lot of pride in the professionalism and dedication of the staff here,” said Zacharias.“They have always had a sense of ownership in the product. For me, this is a growth opportunity and I’m pleased that I will still be involved with The Western Producer, while also exploring the bigger picture of Glacier operations.”
