A past-president of Canadian Western Agribition is among the farmers lining up for federal political nominations.

Gary Anderson of Bethune, Sask., announced Feb. 18 he would seek the Liberal nomination in Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre.

The riding is held by Larry Spencer, who was suspended from the Canadian Alliance caucus and not allowed to join the new Conservative caucus for comments he made about gays.

Anderson said his family has had strong Liberal connections since his grandfather’s days.

“The time is right,” he said. “Agriculture certainly needs some voices in Ottawa.”

Anderson, his wife, son and three daughters operate the farm homesteaded by his grandfather in 1904. The business now includes a 6,000-acre grain farm and a purebred Limousin herd.

“Geoff is 23 and keen about stepping up to the plate,” Anderson said of his son taking over the farm work while he sells party memberships.
