FARGO, N.D. – David Susag thinks there is a point about all hydraulic systems that is sometimes misunderstood.
The hydraulic engineer with Case New Holland in Fargo said more frequent filter changes is no substitute for the recommended oil change.
“When you think about it, your hydraulic oil does a tremendous amount of work. It may never break down like motor oil, but it does get contaminated.
“We can filter out anything larger than five microns, but eventually you get a lot of two and three micron particles and they circulate through your pumps, valves, hoses and hydraulic cylinders. Plus that same oil lubricates your drive train.
“We recommend that hydraulic oil should be changed every 1,500 hours. If not, you’re allowing abrasive particles to gradually wear down all those parts.”
