Deputy premier and former agriculture minister Clay Serby will not run in the next Saskatchewan election.

The MLA for Yorkton issued a News release

news earlier this month saying he would continue to represent the constituency until an election is called. That is widely expected to happen within the next few weeks but could be delayed until spring.

Serby has been undergoing cancer treatment since spring and missed the last legislative session. He previously had surgery for colon cancer in 2004.

First elected in 1991, he has been a cabinet minister since 1995, holding several portfolios including health, municipal affairs and rural development.

He was appointed deputy premier in 2001 after Lorne Calvert assumed the role of NDP leader and premier.

Recently, he took on the role of campaign co-chair for the party. At the time he said he would consider running if a spring election was to be held. But he told reporters recently that he had decided not to run again.

Serby joins a list of several former cabinet ministers who aren’t seeking re-election.
