Auction house swallows competitor

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers is expanding its Saskatchewan presence with the acquisition of Clarke Auctioneers Ltd. of Rouleau, Sask.

Ritchie Bros. announced Feb. 15 it had signed a letter of intent to acquire the business and assets of Clarke Auctioneers, effective March 15.

Auctioneers Darren and Jordan Clarke are expected to join Ritchie Bros. at that time.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to a Ritchie Bros. News release

news, the size of the transaction is “not considered material relative to the company’s consolidated operations.”

Grant and Joan Clarke started Clarke Auctioneers in 1980 and later purchased Doug McConnell Auction Sales and Service in Assiniboia, Sask., to expand their company’s presence. Sons Darren and Jordan joined the company in 2001 and 2003, respectively.

Clarke conducts about 60 sales each year. It built an auction centre west of Rouleau a few years ago.

Peter Blake, chief executive officer of Ritchie Bros., said the acquisition of Clarke will help the company expand its agricultural operations in Saskatchewan.

Ritchie Bros. already has more than 60 agricultural auctions booked in the province this spring. The company is the world’s largest auctioneer of industrial equipment, operating in more than 25 countries.
