Hogtown might not be much of a cow town, but it proved too much for a Saskatchewan rodeo to handle.

Organizers of an annual harvest rodeo in Moose Jaw, Sask., say they learned on Oct. 13 that a first-time rodeo scheduled for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto is to be held on Nov. 5-6, the same dates as their event.

The Toronto rodeo will be a joint event by the Ontario Rodeo Association and its western cousin, the Canadian Cowboys Association.

Normally schedules are designed not to conflict so rodeo participants can compete in as many of the best shows as possible. However, Moose Jaw organizers said by the time they were notified of the Royal event, it was too late to change their date.

“We knew we couldn’t ask the cowboys to choose between the two big events and so we chose to not have ours this fall,” said Moose Jaw Exhibition president Joyce Walter.

“Toronto is a pretty big draw for the contestants.”

She said sponsors and stock contractor Art Francis have agreed to move the rodeo to March.
