Crop production up in ’93
Saskatchewan crop production of the major grains, oilseeds and specialty crops in 1993 was 25.07 million tonnes, 21 percent above the 10-year (1983-92) average of 20.69 million tonnes.
The rise in production was due to above-average yields for all crops except lentils and canary seed, and above-average harvested area.
The area harvested in 1993 was 30.89 million acres, up four percent from the 10-year average harvested area of 29.57 million acres. Cool wet conditions last summer slowed crop development and delayed harvest, so approximately three percent of Saskatchewan crops were left standing in the fields. An average 15 percent of the crop was left standing in the Hudson Bay region of the province.
