SASKATOON – Election fever moved through the crowd at the Saskatchewan NDP annual convention like a fall flu as premier Roy Romanow made his address to more than 800 delegates.
In his speech last weekend, Romanow suggested party members prepare for an election call.
“We’ve got to roll up our sleeves leaving this convention and prepare for the next election,” said the premier.
He said in an interview that 1996 would be the most likely time for an election call. However, with an NDP government in Ontario set to make its election move sometime in 1995, there is speculation that the Sask-atchewan leader might make his move early, in case Bob Rae’s party doesn’t fare well.

Improving oil and gas revenues and a more optimistic farm economy may give Romanow added incentive to act sooner. He also implied in his speech that a balanced budget may be closer than 1996.
“There’s only one thing that threatens to undo us and that is the next election. So I stand before you today asking you to work as hard as ever, even harder for our next election victory,” Romanow said.
