Glacier FarmMedia – Participants in a new twine collection effort stand to win $3,000 each for 4-H or their favourite agricultural organization or charity.

With $12,000 in total cash prizes, the Great Twine Round-Up is a province-wide initiative to promote the recycling of used plastic baler twine.

The more bags of twine each participant drops off, the greater their chances of winning proceeds for their 4-H club or district or an Alberta-based not-for-profit organization or charity involved in agriculture. Participants have until May 31, 2025 to enter.

The organizers include Cleanfarms — an ag stewardship organization — in partnership with the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG), an advocacy group dedicated to solutions for agricultural plastics.

“Every year, Alberta farms use thousands of rolls of plastic baler twine,” wrote Barry Friesen, executive director of Cleanfarms, in a recent release.

“By rerouting the used plastic for recycling, we can significantly reduce its footprint on our environment and work towards a more sustainable future for our farming communities and future generations in the province.”

The contest is part of the “Alberta Ag Plastic. Recycle It!” pilot program, in which Alberta farmers recycle used plastic baler twine and grain bags.

Last year, Cleanfarms recycled 673,000 kilograms of grain bags and 95,400 kilograms of twine through the pilot led by the APRG.

“We’re very proud of what the ‘Alberta Ag Plastics. Recycle It!’ pilot has already achieved,” wrote Assar Grinde, APRG chair.

“And we’re especially excited about this contest because we know many people that are invested in the 4-H program, and this gives them another way to demonstrate their commitment to farm sustainability and agriculture.”

Funding has been granted by the Government of Alberta and is being administered by Alberta Beef Producers. Further details about the Round-Up and how to participate are available on GreatTwineRoundUp.ca.
