The Canadian Senate rejected amendments to Bill C-234 in a pivotal vote Nov. 7.
By a 42-28 margin, with three abstentions, senators voted against a change to the bill that would remove heating and cooling of barns and greenhouses from a potential carbon tax exemption.
The amendment had been passed during agriculture committee scrutiny and led to an outcry from farm organizations across the country. They reacted favourably to the vote.

“The rejected amendment would have denied financial relief to tens of thousands of hardworking livestock, greenhouse growers and farmers, placing undue pressure on their livelihoods and our food security,” said Kyle Larkin, executive director of Grain Growers of Canada.
The bill will return to the Senate, unamended, for third reading.
