Canada will soon have a national Food Day.

A bill sponsored by senator Rob Black to establish a national day of recognition received royal assent last week.

“I would like to thank parliamentarians of all stripes, from both the Senate and the House, for their thoughtful reflections on the role of agriculture from coast to coast to coast,” said Black in a news release. “I am delighted that Food Day Canada was passed into law in time for its 20th anniversary.”

The first Food Day was organized by the late Anita Stewart in 2003 in response to the BSE crisis. There have been food days organized since then to celebrate the ingredients, cuisine and culture that can be found across the country. Farmers, chefs, organizations and others participate in recognizing the sector that plays a major role in the Canadian economy.

Food Day will be celebrated the Saturday before the first Monday in August. That weekend is a holiday long weekend in many provinces.
