A shipping container packed full of egg and lentil protein crisps, as well as dried soup mix, is on its way to help the people of Ukraine.
The shipment is expected to arrive in Poland before being shipped onward to Ukraine.
“If all goes well, it should be in Poland in about two weeks,” said Dion Martens, executive director of Saskatchewan Egg Producers.
“Humanitarian organizations will be taking the protein crisps and dried soup mix by truck into Ukraine to various places where it will be distributed through churches and other charities that are still working there,” he said.

During its annual general meeting, Saskatchewan Egg Farmers donated $150,000, about 53,000 servings, of the protein crisps.
Each serving contains 12 grams of protein in a chip-sized bag.
“I think it’s fair to say Russia’s invasion has caused a lot of suffering for the citizens of Ukraine. Most of us don’t really know what it’s like to live through that, but watching it has certainly been quite shocking and saddening.
“We know in crises like this one, that healthy ready-to-eat food is often a really significant need. So, when our farmers were gathered together, one of the things that they talked about was, that’s a need that we’re able to fill,” he said.
Todd’s Protein Crisps are produced by Evova Foods, a subsidiary of Saskatchewan Egg Producers. The protein crisps won a SIAL Food Product Innovation Award in 2019 and are available online and in more than 550 stores across Canada and the United States.
East West Express donated the trucking costs to ship the product from Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan Egg Producers teamed up with North Okanagan Valley Gleaners Society and Global Emergency Missions Society, which are handling the logistics of transporting the protein crisps and dried soup mix to Ukraine.
These organizations have experience getting humanitarian assistance into the war-torn country.
“We reached out to them, and they were thrilled to partner with us to be able to add value to what they’re sending as well,” he said.
