CHICAGO, March 24 (Reuters) – Canada is expected to resume shipping potatoes soon from Prince Edward Island to the mainland United States for human consumption, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Thursday, after a trade spat.
Canada in November halted exports of Prince Edward Island potatoes to the United States for human consumption and planting, after Washington threatened to ban shipments over concerns about a plant disease called potato wart fungus that can reduce yields.
The USDA said it has now determined that exports of Prince Edward Island table stock potatoes – potatoes meant for human consumption without processing – may restart under certain conditions that will pose little risk of introducing the disease into the United States.
